Local Code is a free, open-source Mac AI agent that costs $0 per token on device; the smallest model needs a 16 GB Mac

Local Code is a free AI agent app for the Mac from the team behind Draw Things. It is open source under GPL-3.0, and on-device models cost $0 per token. The smallest model, Qwen 3.8 27B, needs a Mac with 16 GB of memory and 10-21 GB of disk; DeepSeek 4.1 Flash 1017 needs 32 GB of memory minimum and a 376 GB download. Python and Node.js are built in, so it can make documents and slide decks, analyze spreadsheets and write code, and the agent runs in Apple's App Sandbox with access only to the folders you allow. Cloud models are optional: use your own API keys at no markup, or buy cloud credit starting at $9.99 with no subscription. If you pick a cloud model, your prompts and files go to that provider.

Try it

Download Local Code from getlocalcode.app, then pick a model that fits your Mac's memory (Qwen 3.8 27B needs 16 GB+).

Mac app; we have not tested it ourselves (our test box runs Linux).
